Cleaning and Disinfection with Virkon S Reduces Lawsonia intracellularis Survival and Transmission to Naive Pigs

Washing pens followed by disinfection with potassium peroxymonosulphate prevented the transmission of Lawsonia intracellularis in this Australian experiment.

Lawsonia intracellularis infection was transmitted to naive pigs introduced into pens contaminated by pigs with proliferative enteropathy, report Dr Alison Collins and colleagues at the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries in Narellan, Australia.

In a paper in the latest issue of Journal of Swine Health and Production, they add, however, that cleaning pens with a pressure hose then disinfecting with potassium peroxymonosulphate (Virkon S; Antec International, Sudbury, Suffolk, United Kingdom) was able to prevent transmission of infection in a second group of naive pigs.

L. intracellularis is an important pathogen of pigs, causing acute intestinal haemorrhage (proliferative haemorrhagic enteropathy; PHE). The same pathogen also causes ileitis.
