Improved handling systems for pigs at slaughter
By the MLC - A project to improve and devise new systems of pig handling prior to stunning without force, so as to minimise stress and to evaluate the improvements in welfare, ease of loading and the economic benefit was funded by MAFF and industrial partners including MLC.
Information was accumulated on a wide range of parameters including biochemical indicators of stress in the abattoir environment, group size, optimal levels, labyrinth and baffle race design. Optimal methods of moving pigs in groups of 5 up to 30 were devised and various means of funnelling off one pig for presentation at a single electrical stunner or in desired multiples for gaseous stunning. The influence of light, noise and smell were also investigated.
The wealth of information has been translated into best practice guidelines in a Reference Manual for professional pig handlers. The pre-slaughter handling requirements, of pigs, vary depending on the stunning system in use. The guide examines current practice, requirements, problems and shows possible solutions to improve the speed and efficiency of handling, to eliminate the use of goads and to reduce stress levels in the lairage.
