Associated disease caused in pigs by Ascaris and Oesophagostomum.
Parazitotsenozy i assotsiativnye bolezni, pp 219-234

Oesophagostomum dentatum and Ascaris suum were the most common helminths in >5000 pigs investigated in the Lithuanian SSR. They were recorded in 40.4 and 7.4% of the pigs respectively and were mixed in 15.6%. The pathology of mixed infections and their effect on the activities of alkaline phosphatase, leucine aminopeptidase and enterokinase was studied in experimentally infected piglets and the results are described in detail. The study demonstrated that mixed infection is not simply a mechanical addition of the lesions caused by the nematodes but an associated disease with severe digestive and respiratory symptoms, high fever and disturbance of the normal activity of intestinal enzymes.
