Retrospective study on porcine circovirus type 2 infection in pigs from 1985 to 1997 in Spain

In accordance with other retrospective studies, the results of this Spanish study indicated that PCV2 infection was present in Spain before the first description of PWMS. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues of 189 pigs collected from 1986 to 1997 were submitted to an in situ hybridisation technique for virus detection and identification of characteristic lesions. Over 80% of the studied tissues showed lymphocyte depletion. Similarly, archived sera from 388 pigs were serologically examined and over 70% of sera were tested positive for PCV2 antibodies. Consequently, the virus was introduced before 1986, as the tested sera of 1986 were already PCV2 positive. PMWS was also an undiagnosed or misdiagnosed disease before the first PMWS outbreaks recorded in Spain.
