Savaging behaviour in gilts and sows
Canadian Journal of Animal Science, 83, 2003, 819-821
This survey carried out either in all-gilt farms and mixed-parity farms focused on various aspects of savaging behavior in gilts and sows and indicates that gilts are more likely to kill one or more of their piglets than sows and that sows which had killed one or more of their piglets when they were gilts are more likely to have a savaging behavior at the following parities than sows which had not done so previously. This underlines the need for a careful monitoring farrowing gilts, particularly in all-gilt farms, and suggests that savaging can be used as a culling criterion for gilts.
