Association between Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae at different respiratory sites and presence of histopathological lung lesions.

The detection of M. hyopneumoniae by means of nested PCR (nPCR) in nasal swabs has been previously described. However, is the presence of the pathogen in the upper respiratory tract (nasal cavities and tonsils) or in bronchi correlated to microscopic lung lesions characteristic of enzootic pneumonia (EP)? A total of 195 pigs were included in this study, selected either on the presence of macroscopic lesions at slaughter (n=40) or the manifestation of various clinical signs (n=155). For each animal, three swabs (nasal cavities, tonsils and bronchi) and lung samples were collected. Swabs were tested by nPCR while lung samples were attributed a score ranging form 0 to 4 and considered as non diagnostic if scored 1-2 and compatible with enzootic pneumonia if scored 3-4. The detection of M. hyopneumonia genome is nasal cavities and tonsils was significantly correlated to the presence of the pathogen at the bronchial level. In addition, the presence of microscopic lesions of EP was found significantly correlated to nPCR positive swabs The results of this study suggest nasal swabs which are easy to perform, as good indicators of the presence microscopic lung lesions of EP.
