Adaptation and limitations of established hemagglutination inhibition assays for the detection of porcine anti-swine influenza virus H1N2 antibodies.

The identification of the subtype of influenza virus responsible of an outbreak allows to optimize control strategies. So far, the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay was able to distinguish between antibodies to the H1N1 or to the H3N2 subtype. The emergence of the H1N2 subtype now raises a diagnostic problem since both H1N1 and H3N2 persist in the US swine population. The results of this study showed that in case of a mixed infection involving H1N2, HI methodology could not identify the antibodies of the different subtypes co-circulating in the same population. Other diagnostic methods are thus required for the identification of the various subtypes.
