Swine Influenza

GERARD C
La grippe peut aussi sévir en post-sevrage [swine influenza in postweaning pigs].
Réussir Porcs, March 2004, Nº103, 24-25

This paper is based on the account of Dr H. Guilmoto, swine practitioner from Brittany (France), which reports the occurrence of influenza-like illness in piglets of 6-7 weeks of age in several herds for several years. Protection provided by colostral immunity is usually believed to last until 10-12 weeks of age. However, even if a positive correlation between antibody titers in colostrum and antibody titers in piglets was demonstrated, quantitative and qualitative variations of colostrum do exist, and, as time goes by, piglets have decreasing antibody titers. Moreover, H1N1 and H1N2 subtypes of swine influenza virus (SIV) were commonly detected during the fattening period in herds affected by such influenza-like illness, SIV was thus considered as the actual cause of the illness observed during the post-weaning period.
