The challenge of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
Nature, July 2004, Nº430
The authors address the issue of emerging infections considering three types of diseases, i.e. newly emerging diseases (HIV, SARS), re-emerging infections (influenza, West Nile virus) and deliberately released infectious agents (anthrax). In all cases, they lay great emphasis on the necessity of prevention through the development of surveillance tools, diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines and optimal collaboration between all health protagonists.
