Ascaridose : vermifugez aussi les porcs charcutiers [prevention of ascariasis : use of anthelmintics in fattening pigs too].
Porc magazine, July/August 2004, Nº379, 56-60
Ascaris suum in pigs is commonly associated with liver white spots at slaughter, and may cause major economic losses due to liver condemnations, reduced growth rate and lowered feed conversion in growing pigs. In France, like in other European countries, antihelmintics are commonly used in dams and piglets but not in fattening pigs because swine farmers wrongly consider that fattening pigs are sufficiently protected against parasitosis. The high prevalence of liver lesions at the slaughterhouses clearly demonstrates that A. suum is widely present in herds from Brittany. The cost of ascariasis was estimated at 9€/pig. In contrast the cost of an antihelmintic treatment was estimated at 0.50€. Routine antihelmintic treatments every 5-6 weeks are thus strongly recommended in fattening pigs.
