Escherichia coli & Clostridium dificile / perfrigens

VU-KHAC H, HOLODA E, PILIPCINEC E
Distribution of virulence genes in Escherichia coli strains isolated from diarrhoeic piglets in the Slovak Republic.
Journal of Veterinary Medicine. B., 2004, Volume 51, N?7, 343-347

A screening by PCR of 92 strains of Escherichia coli isolated from pigs died of pre-weaning diarrhea was carried out the Slovak Republic in order to assess the prevalence of the genes encoding for virulence factors, i.e. fimbrial adhesins (F4, F5, F6, F18 and F41), enterotoxins (Sta, STb, LT and EAST1) and Shigatoxin STx2e. The results are summarized in the following table:

Gene encoding for: F4 F5+F41 F6 F18 Sta Stb LT Stx2e EAST1
Prevalence 24% 1.1% 3.3% 10.8% 14.1% 40.2% 26.1% 1.1% 53.3%

A strong correlation was observed between the gene encoding for EAST1 (astA) and that encoding for F4.
