Features of cell degeneration and death in hepatic failure and systemic lymphoid depletion characteristic of porcine circovirus-2-associated postweaning multisystemic wasting disease.
Veterinary Pathology, 2004, Volume 41, N°5, 471-481
Four categories of gnotobiotic pigs were included in this study: uninfected controls, PCV2-infected gnotobiotic pigs with subclinical signs, PCV2-infected gnotobiotic pigs immunosuppressed by cyclosporine, PCV2-infected gnotobiotic pigs with clinical PMWS. For all categories, the distribution of single-stranded DNA breaks by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) in tissue section replicates from lymphoid tissues and livers was determined as indicative of apoptosis. The results show that even if PMWS is associated with lymphoid depletion and hepatocyte loss, the virus itself cannot be held directly responsible for apoptosis which may be induced by hyperthermia.
