Comparison of different pig euthanasia methods available to the farmers.
Proceedings of the International Society for Animal Hygiene, 2004, 45-46

European regulations allow the use of electrocution, carbon dioxide, captive bolt, free bullet and blunt trauma to the head for stunning and killing animals too ill or too severely injured to be cured. All these techniques were assessed in suckling piglets, 8-25kg piglets, growing pigs and sows considering their feasibility under farm conditions and parameters such as pain, cardiac function, time necessary for loss of reflexes, loss of consciousness and death. Under farm conditions, the recommended method for euthanizing suckling piglets results that of the blunt trauma to the head and for the other categories that of the captive bolt possibly followed by chest sticking in order to quicken cardiac arrest.
