Proceedings of the International Society for Animal Hygiene, 2004, 99-103
Since its creation in 1924, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has been developing an efficient network aimed at collecting and diffusing information in order to prevent the spread of animal diseases and zoonoses. Each of the 167 current member countries has a delegate who belongs the International Committee which is the highest authority of the OIE and meets once a year. Moreover, the global functioning of the OIE relies on various levels of organization which comprises Commissions, Working Groups, Ad hoc Groups, Reference Laboratories, Collaborating Centers. The OIE straightly collaborates with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Heath Organization (WHO) and takes part to the development of initiatives which improve disease information and epidemiological intelligence. Among the recent decisions taken by the International Committee features that of creating an Ad hoc Group on emerging diseases.
