From zoonotic influenza to full scale influenza pandemic: a window of opportunity not to be missed.
Proceedings of the International Society for Animal Hygiene, 2004, 315-317
The events of 1997 and 2003/2004 have clearly indicated that direct infection of men by avian influenza viruses, i.e. without previous reassortment in an intermediate species such as pigs, can occur. The H5N1 virus responsible of the 2003/2004 outbreak was recently shown to stem from the H5N1 virus responsible of the 1997 outbreak through genetic reassortment events and the role of domestic ducks in the generation and the maintenance of the 2003/2004 virus is highly probable. Avian influenza viruses can infect both humans and pigs and these triangular circulation, with or without reassortment, is an actual threat to be aware of. In case of an outbreak, culling sensible species and implementing protective measures in the populations at risk should be done as soon as possible.
