Recommendations on swine influenza vaccines and vaccination strategies.
Proceedings of the International Society for Animal Hygiene, 2004, 325-326
The circulation of the new swine influenza virus (SIV) subtype H1N2 has modified the epidemiological situation of SIV. Under experimental conditions (H1N1+H3N2) vaccines were shown not to protect animals against H1N2 suggesting that this novel subtype should be included in SIV vaccines. On the other hand, recent challenge studies demonstrate that no update of the H1N1 or H3N2 vaccine strains is necessary due to the minimal antigenic drift in those SIV subtypes. Vaccinating sows remains the recommended vaccination strategy given that it induces long-lasting protection in piglets (until 16 weeks of age).
