Trends in the North American swine industry.
Association Française de Médecine Vétérinaire Porcine, 2004, 5-14
The current situation of the North American swine industry is reported. Over the last five years (1998-2003), USA pork production has increased by 4.8%, far behind Brazil (51.5%) and Canada (41.7%). The low growth in North American hog production is probably due to increasing regulations linked to environment, to regulatory pressure regarding construction and expansion, to diseases such as PRRS and to high labor costs. Currently, the USA rank third for pork production behind China (World leader) and the European Union. It is noteworthy that the USA import a great number of live hogs from Canada and export to Mexico. Such a considerable movement of live animals may give rise to some concern regarding the potential spread of infectious diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease. Like in other parts of the World, North American herds become fewer and larger and production efficiency is steadily improving.
