Enquête de terrain sur la nécrose d'oreilles en élevage porcin et recherche du PCV2 et du SDRP [Field survey on porcine necrotic ear syndrome and detection of PCV2 and PRRSV].
Association Française de Médecine Vétérinaire Porcine, 2004, 153
Ear necrosis affects post-weaning and fattening pigs and leads sometimes to considerable tissue loss. A questionnaire about necrotic ear syndrome in swine was submitted to 13 veterinarians and 62 herd owners in Brittany (France) and the presence of PCV2 and PRRSV in these herds was investigated in post-weaning and fattening pigs. Half of the herds had animals with ear necrosis. Lesions appear at the age of 6.5 weeks and usually resolve by the age of 11.5 weeks. Ear necrosis affects a mean of 11.1% animals of the herds. A clear "pen effect" was observed by farmers. Histological results did not reveal any typical viral lesion. No significant difference in the prevalence of PRRSV and PCV2 was found between healthy animals and animals with ear necrosis. Therefore, PCV2 and PRRSV can be ruled out as potential etiologic agents of ear necrosis and the etiology of swine necrotic ear syndrome remains unclear.
