Demonstration of efficacy in pigs of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae experimental vaccines by an innovative needle-free route.
American Association of Swine Veterinarians - Proceedings, 2005, 113-115

The efficacy of three experimental Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae vaccines administered through transdermal injection with an innovative needle-free system was assessed. Three vaccinated groups and one control group were included in the study. At D35 all pigs were challenged intratracheally with a M. hyopneumoniae lung homogenate and intranasally with the same material on the following day. The serological titers of each pig were determined by ELISA before vaccination, at challenge and before necropsy. The weight of each pigs was recorded at challenge and at necropsy. The lung pneumonic lesion score was determined at necropsy. A significant protection of pigs against challenge was achieved in all three vaccinated groups. This provides the first indication that the specifically designed formulation administered using a needle-free device and thus ensuring a good dispersion of the product in the sub-dermal tissues, has the potential to generate a strong and efficacious immune response.
