La stratégie allemande: remodélisation des ateliers, naissage gros volume [The German strategy: restructuration of the units, big-size farrowing unit].
Porc Magazine, January 2005, N°384, 36-43
Since the reunification of of Germany, the German swine industry is trying to adapt and find the right balance between the pre-existing huge State farms of the East and the small familial structures of the West. The current trend consists in keeping the familial model bringing it to a larger scale and try to meet the national piglet deficit. Hog farmers tend to chose the multisite production system with more than 500 sows, usually managed in 7-10 batches, own replacement gilts, home-made feed and liquid feeding. The description of a recently restructured site is provided.
