TOKACH M, DE ROUCHEY J
Reducing/managing variation in the nursery.

Three areas for dealing with variation in growth rate are discussed: artificial reduction in variation, methods to reduce variation and managing variation without reducing it. For each area, the corresponding methods are described:
  • Artificial reduction in variation:
    • Sorting into the nursery
    • Continual cross-fostering in the farrowing house
  • Methods to reduce variation:
    • Split-sex housing
    • Segregated parity flow
    • High-health systems
    • Use of opportunity barns
    • Increase weaning age and reducing variation in weaning age
    • Increase weight gain of the smallest pigs in the group
    • Selecting sires with similar indexes
    • Feeding multiple diets within a group
    • Feed grade-antibiotics
    • Prompt treatment of clinical bacterial diseases
  • Managing variation without reducing it
    • Increase growth rate in the entire group
Achieving a high-health status within the production system, taking advantage of some extra space to raise small pigs separately and increasing the overall growth rate of the entire group (through genetics, selection of sows with high milk production and proper feeding) are the most effective methods to dealing with variation in growth rate.
