Isolation and preliminary characterization of a novel Helicobacter species from swine.
American Journal of Veterinary Research, 2005, Volume 66, Nº6, 938-943

Four young conventionally reared pigs and 21 gnotobiotic pigs were investigated for a new Helicobacter species, similar to H. pylori found in humans. Colonies presenting Helicobacter-like morphologic features were collected from gastric mucosal homogenates (10% wt/vol), tested for urease activity and cultured on Skirrow medium. Isolates were then analysed by use of ELISA, SDS-PAGE electrophoresis and western blot tests. The results showed that swine-origin Helicobacter species, similar to H. pylori, could be one of the aetiological agents of gastric mucosal ulcers and ulceration of the nonglandular pars oesophagea in pigs.
