Development of the immune system in the neonatal piglet and its interaction with PCV2 infection.
International Conference on Animal Circoviruses and Associated Diseases, European Society for Veterinary Virology, 2005
The immune system of neonatal piglets undergoes a very rapid and massive development. This drastic expansion seems to be one of the factors that interact with porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) infection to trigger postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). It was suggested that the lymphoid depletion and immunosuppression observed in PMWS-affected pigs could be the consequence of the mechanisms limiting the development of piglets' immune system.
