STAEBLER S, SYDLER T, BUERGI E, McCULLOUGH K, McNEILLY F, ALLAN G, POSPISCHIL A
PMWS: an emerging disease identified in archived porcine tissues.
The Veterinary Journal, 2005, Volume 170, 132-134

Though postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) was first identified in 2001 in Switzerland, it was thought to be present in this country before. Archive tissue samples (lymphoid organs and ileum) from 496 necropsied pigs were investigated for PMWS. The tissues were investigated immunohistochemically by use of a monoclonal antibody specific to porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) capsid antigen encoded by ORF2. The results showed that the virus was present in 39 pigs and one of the positive samples was dated 1986, indicating that PCV-2 infection appeared before PMWS was first described in Switzerland.
