Characterization of a previously unidentified viral protein in porcine circovirus type 2-infected cells and its role in virus-induced apoptosis.
Journal of Virology, 2005, Volume 79, N°13, 8262-8274
So far, two open reading frames (ORFs) have been identified in porcine circovirus (PCV). Another viral protein, coded by a genome portion named ORF3, was detected and was shown to have a significant incidence on porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) apoptosis in cultured PK15 cells. The pathway used to induce apoptosis was shown to be similar to that of viral infection (activation of caspase-8 and caspase-3). This new viral protein was however not shown to be necessary for viral replication.
