Studies of H5N1 influenza virus infection of pigs by using viruses isolated in Vietnam and Thailand in 2004.
Journal of Virology, 2005, Volume 79, N°16, 10821-10825
The aim of these studies was to investigate the possibility for pigs to serve as hosts for the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus. Sera collected from 3175 Vietnamese pigs was analysed and the analysis (virus neutralisation assay and Western blot analysis) showed that 8 pigs were infected by the H5N1 virus. Further analyses showed that the virus replicated in the pigs' respiratory tract, thus suggesting that pigs could host the virus.
