Spatial and temporal patterns of pig herds diagnosed with Postweaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS) during the first two years of its occurrence in Denmark.
Veterinary Microbiology, 2005, Volume 110, N°1-2, 17-26

This retrospective longitudinal study consisted in spatial, temporal and spatio-temporal investigations involving 6724 Danish pig herds that, between October 2001 and September 2003, have submitted at least one of their animal for diagnosis of PMWS to the two major veterinary diagnostic laboratories in Denmark. The epidemiological data were analyzed by scan statistics and allowed to individuate two geographical clusters and one spatio-temporal cluster. In both geographical clusters, the risk, for a swine herd, to be diagnosed as PMWS-affected was more than twofold higher than in the other areas. The spatio-temporal cluster was comprised within one of the spatial clusters and regarded the first half of 2002, during which the risk for a herd of this area of being diagnosed with PMWS was also higher compared to other time-periods. At that point, three hypotheses were formulated to explain these results: introduction of a new pathogen, change in management and variations in sensitivity of the diagnostic procedures. Interestingly, it is concluded that the spread of PMWS among Danish pig herds during this two-year period is likely to be due to the introduction of a new pathogen.
