In vitro susceptibility of macrophages to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus varies between genetically diverse lines of pigs.
Viral Immunology, 2005, Volume 18, N°3, 506-512

Five genetic lines of pigs (Landrace, Large White, Duroc-Large White, Hampshire, Duroc-Pietrain) were investigated for differences in susceptibility to PRRSV in base of the percentage of PRRSV-infected macrophages detected by in vitro flow cytometry (FACS) assay. Following this first screening, two lines (Large white and Duroc-Pietrain) were found highly divergent and submitted to an additional FACS assay. This second part of the study confirmed a consistent difference between the two suggesting that the susceptibility of macrophages to PRRSV actually varies from a genetic line to another. This aspect of the interaction between PRRSV and its host should be further investigated in vivo since it could lead to the identification of specific genes and subsequently genetic markers that could represent new strategies for the control of PRRS.
