Impact of PRRS virus on classical swine fever vaccine.

An experimental protocol including five groups of 5-7 pigs was designed as follows:

Pigs infected with classical swine fever virus (CSFV),
Pigs vaccinated with CSF vaccine and challenged with virulent CSF,
Pigs infected with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and challenged with CSFV
Pigs infected with PRRSV, vaccinated with CSF vaccine and challenged with CSFV,
Control pigs (no infection, no vaccination).

It is noteworthy that CSF vaccination in PRRSV-infected pigs was shown to prolong PRRSV viremia, and that the efficacy of the CSF vaccine failed to protect PRRSV-infected pigs against CSFV.
