Grain rich Hungary chases know-how.
Pig Progress, 2005, Volume 21, N°10, 22-23
A lack of investments over the last decade has deteriorated the economic situation of Hungarian pig farms leaving them with poor prospects for the future. When compared to Western European farms, Hungarian pig production parameters remain 15-20% lower and the national production keeps on decreasing. On the other hand, Hungary’s accession to the EU may weigh heavy on an already weakened sector since the new EU environmental regulations require investments that farmers cannot afford and that banks. However, provided financial means to modernize its pig production systems, Hungary could play a major role in Europe: it is a major grain producer, large surface area are available to set up pig production sites without nearby population, and pig trade with neighboring countries is facilitated by a high health status.
