Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome and porcine circovirus type 2 - Survey of US swine practitioners.
American Association of Swine Veterinarians - Proceedings, 2006, 231-234
The results of this survey are based upon the answers of 22 swine practitioners representative of 2,212,00 sows in the more dense hog regions of the USA in the fall 2005. PCV2 was detected in up to 50% of the farms under the care of the surveyed veterinarians and nine of them (40%) consider that PMWS affects more than 10% of the farm under their care. The occurrence of PMWS leads to increased mortality and increased health expenses and is thus associated to a marked economic impact. The clinical signs appear to affect animals from 6 to 16 weeks of age. In case of PMWS, the first move of most of the surveyed veterinarians consists in controlling other pathogens which most of them consider an efficient way to improve the situation. The use of a PCV2 vaccine is contemplated more particularly in larger farms (>500 females).
