Demonstration of porcine circovirus type 2 in the testes and accessory sex glands of a boar.

An 11-month-old boar presenting infertility (poor sperm numbers and low motility) and poor general state (fever, respiratory disorders, tachycardia) originating from a boar stud where other boars had also experienced transient infertility was accurately necropsied and submitted to the relative histological examination and analyses. The presence of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Pasteurella multocida type D was detected in lung tissue while PCV2 antigen was found in lung, lymphoid tissues, intestine, bulbourethral glands, epididymes, testes and seminal vesicles. In addition, PCV2-associated lesions were observed in the lungs and lymphoid tissues. The boar involved in this study was largely out of the usual age range of clinical PCV2 infection but these results suggest that PCV2 contributed to the disorders affecting this boar. This case is the first report of PCV2 infection of the secondary sex glands in a boar in a non-experimental context. Moreover, a potential link between Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and PCV2 is once more underlined.
