Cardiovascular lesions in pigs naturally or experimentally infected with porcine circovirus type 2.
Journal of Comparative Pathology, 2006, Volume 134, N°1, 105-110
This paper provides a description of the histopathological findings identified in naturally and experimentally PCV2-infected growing pigs (n=7) with severe cardiovascular lesions. Depending on the examined pigs, such histopathological changes included myocardiocyte swelling or necrosis sometimes associated with myocardial fibrosis, severe diffuse segmental to circumferential lymphohistiocytic and plasmacytic periarteritis and endarteritis in several organs, obliterated blood vessels in areas of granulomatous necrotizing lymphadenitis. These results point up the role of the cardiovascular system in general and endothelial cells in particular in the pathogenesis of PCV2 infection.
