Immunopathological effects of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) on swine alveolar macrophages by in vitro inoculation.
Veterinary Immunology and Immunopathology, 2006, Volume 110, N°3-4, 207-219
The monocyte-macrophage lineage is known to be the main target of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and to harbor large amounts of infectious material. This feature of PCV2 infection was investigated in vitro to determine its immunopathological impact on swine alveolar macrophages (AMs) and in particular on their ability to develop an appropriate level of defense against opportunistic pathogens such as Candida albicans. The inoculation of PCV2 resulted in a significantly decreased microbicidal ability of AMs. Such functional alteration of the pulmonary defense system due to PCV2-containing AMs is thus speculated to facilitate the development of co-factor dependent PMWS.
