Aflatoxicoses chez le porc. Etude bibliographique de données cliniques et expérimentales [Aflatoxicosis in swine - a bibliographic review of clinical cases and experimental data].
Revue de Médecine Vétérinaire, 2005, Volume 156, Nº12, 591-605

Some strains of Aspergillus flavus and almost all strains of Aspergillus parasiticus produce aflatoxins, in particular aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), which induce hepatic failure in humans and animals and of which the maximum concentrations in animal feed have been set by the European Community (European Directive 2002/32/EC on the undesirable substances in animal feed). This paper reviews the main features of aflatoxicosis in swine. Death rate in case of acute intoxication may reach 100% within a few hours or days while chronic intoxications initially induce a decrease in feed intake and poor health status. Young animals are more susceptible to aflatoxins than adults. Liver damage is time-dependent and dose-dependent and is usually associated with elevated levels of liver enzymes and low levels of albumin in plasma. It is noteworthy that chronic intoxication with aflatoxins also results in a decrease in the efficacy of vaccination. The detrimental effects of aflatoxins can be limited using organic and inorganic mycotoxin adsorbent supplementation in feed.
