Normativa Europea e aggiornamento dei dati epidemiologici nazionali [European legislation and national epidemiological updates].
Società Italiana di Patologia ed Allevamento dei Suini - Proceedings, 2006, 137-145

The implementation of a monitoring plan for zoonoses and zoonotic agents has been required to the Members of the European Union by the European Parliament with the Directive 2003/99/CE. The monitoring plans will involved the entire animal product industry from the feed for livestock to the finished goods. They will be compulsory for brucellosis, campylobacteriosis, echinococcosis, listeriosis, salmonellosis, trichinelliosis, tubercolosis due to M.bovis and Escerichia coli VTEC. Additional pathogenic agents will be considered in relation to the epidemiological situation of each country. As far as swine are concerned, the monitoring plans aimed at evaluating the prevalence of these infections should be applied from October 2006 to September 2007. This paper provides the description and the results of a monitoring plan regarding the prevalence of Salmonella and Campylobacter in swine slaughtered in Venetia (region of the North-Eastern Italy) over a two-year period, and aiming at the evaluation of the feasibility of such a method. Samples of cæcum content were collected in various slaughterhouses. About one third of the herds from which originated the tested animals resulted positive for Salmonella and about half of them for Campylobacter. The inconvenient of this method was the risk of cross-contamination. Consequently, the next monitoring plan will use samples of mesenteric lymph nodes.
