Esophagogastric ulcer in finishing pigs from twelve large multi-site herds in Southern Spain, 1995-2000: descriptive epidemiology.
American Association of Swine Veterinarians - Proceedings, 2006, 18-24
The necropsy data regarding all animals dead during a five-year period in twelve similar large multisite herds in Southern Spain were analyzed in order to investigate the epidemiology of gastric ulcer, pneumonia and chronic wasting. Death caused by gastric ulcers was found to occur more particularly in animals of 120 days of age and during winter, confirming the seasonality of this condition. The emergence of PMWS in these herds at mid-1999 significantly modified the pattern of mortality: total mortality increased dramatically and the diagnosis of chronic wasting as cause of death increased up to sixfold by the end of the investigation period. However, mortality due to gastric ulcer did not increase with the emergence of PMWS.
