Bulletin No. 26 - Fall 2006

Miscelleanous

Production

LE BAS D
Quel avenir porcin pour la Roumanie? [What will be the future of Rumanian swine production?].
Porc Magazine, 2006, 396, 24-29

Rumania has left the communist model 15 years ago and is now facing up to the free market with the perspective to enter the EU next January. However, such a transition is not that easy in a country where economy needs to be sustained by state subsidies and where corruption remains a wide-spread practice. Almost 40% of the population works in agriculture and swine production reaches 6 millions swine per year, of which only one million originates from industrial production systems. Industrial swine production is in the hands of few managers who control slaughter and transformation as well. In reaction to the failed communist model, the traditional Rumanian farmers reject the notion of cooperative which they view as a threat of the past rather than a promising type of management for swine production. By contrast, European grant programs such as the so-called "Sapard" and foreign investments have already allowed the development of several industrial structures which will progressively be detrimental to the current family model of production. Much remains to be done to organize swine production and pork meat market in Rumania.
