Maladies fréquentes en élevage de porcs fermiers [The most frequent diseases in non-conventional pig farms].
Point vétérinaire, 2005, Volume 36, N°261, 52-56
Non-conventional pig farms consist in small-size farms with low densities of animals, e.g. traditional farming systems or high-quality pig meat specialized farms (French quality red label). Pigs are reared outdoor or on straw bedding, all-in/all-out procedures with cleansing and disinfection are practically non-existent and the use of vaccines or antiparasitics may not be sufficient. Such particular methods of farming lead to the occurrence of diseases that are usually well controlled in more conventional intensive pig production systems: erysipelas, mange, ascariasis are commonly encountered. Parvovirosis accounts for most of the reproduction disorders occurring in non-vaccinated farms while colibacillosis is the main cause of neonatal diarrhea and piglet mortality. Respiratory diseases, in particular atrophic rhinitis and influenza, are frequently observed in growing pigs.
