Muco-cutaneous candidiasis in two pigs with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome.
Veterinary Journal, 2006, Volume 171, N°3, 566-569
Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) is often associated with the occurrence of opportunistic agents which reflects the immunosuppressive features of PMWS and its ability to facilitate infections with usually non-pathogenic agents. This time and for the first time, PMWS is associated with Candida albicans. This paper provides the description of two cases of mucocutaneous candidiasis in PMWS affected pigs originating from two distinct Brazilian herds. Gross findings include a white pseudomembrane in the oral cavity (dorsum of the tongue, soft and hard palate) in one case and plaques of fibrinous material on the esophageal surface associated with hyperkeratosis of the non-glandular stomach in the other case. The presence of yeasts of Candida albicans was demonstrated in both cases. The occurrence of mucocutaneous candidiasis in PMWS-affected pigs supports the immunosuppressive role of PMWS.
