Porcine circovirus 2 uses heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate B glycosaminoglycans as receptors for its attachment to host cells.
Journal of Virology, 2006, Volume 80, N°7, 3487-3494
Several considerations led the authors to examine the potential role of surface glycosaminoglycans (GAG) as receptors for porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2):
- other viruses are already known to use GAG as binding receptors to achieve cell infection,
- GAG are present on many types of cells which is consistent with the fact PCV2 achieves infection in a wide range of cell types,
- All PCV2 isolates show a conserved molecular motif including heparan sulfate (HS) in their capsid protein.
