Immunosuppression as a feature of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome [editorial].
Veterinary Journal, 2006, Volume 171, N°3, 396-397
Several facts indicate that PMWS-affected animals do not have a fully effective immune system:
- lymphocyte depletion and granulomatous inflammation are typically found,
- the occurrence of opportunistic infections is increased,
- the various populations of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) result affected,
- lymphoid tissues show an altered cytokine mRNA expression profile indicating a T-cell dysfunction.
- an altered production of cytokines by PBMC following challenge with phytohaemagglutinin and staphylococcal enterotoxin B has been demonstrated.
