PMWS-PCV2-PCVD-PDNS

SEGALES J, MATEU E
Immunosuppression as a feature of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome [editorial].
Veterinary Journal, 2006, Volume 171, N°3, 396-397

Several facts indicate that PMWS-affected animals do not have a fully effective immune system:
  • lymphocyte depletion and granulomatous inflammation are typically found,
  • the occurrence of opportunistic infections is increased,
  • the various populations of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) result affected,
  • lymphoid tissues show an altered cytokine mRNA expression profile indicating a T-cell dysfunction.
  • an altered production of cytokines by PBMC following challenge with phytohaemagglutinin and staphylococcal enterotoxin B has been demonstrated.
The authors thus suggest to define PMWS as an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome of pigs although the exact mechanism by which PCV2 impairs the immune system is still to be identified.
