VirologyPorcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS)
HAMELIN E, VIEL L
Quand SDRP rime avec biosécurité [When PRRS control goes together with biosecurity].
Porc Magazine, 2006, N°399, 42-52
As porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) goes together with heavy economic loss for swine producers, the control of PRRS through biosecurity measures keeps on gaining importance. This paper reports the successful elimination of PRRS from two French herds with the implementation of strict biosecurity protocols including unidirectional flow for animals and caregivers, shower and complete clothing and footwear change between the various units of the herd, cleaning and disinfection protocols of the facilities, introduction of only PRRSV-negative replacement animals, etc.. The owners do admit that the implementation of such biosecurity and sanitation practices in their production units is very constraining at the beginning and that it requires much rigor. However, after the first impact, they got used to this new way of managing their herd and were very enthusiastic over the results.
