Two swine influenza viruses (SIVs) isolated from two pigs raised in the states of Michigan and Indiana (USA) were analyzed and characterized as H3N1 subtypes. The analysis suggests that the hemagglutinin gene of both H3N1 SIVs originated from a H3N2 turkey isolate while their neuraminidase gene originated from a H1N1 human isolate. Both H3N1 isolates were able to replicate in the respiratory tract of swine, to induce lung lesions and to be shed in their nasal secretions. Given the potential role of swine as mixing vessel for new influenza A reassortant viruses, these findings underline the need for a close surveillance of the emergence and circulation of new influenza virus subtypes in swine populations to prevent outbreaks and interspecies transmission.
