Antigen presenting cells in mucosal sites of veterinary species.
Veterinary Research, 2006, Volume 37, N°3, 339-358
The current knowledge about the presence and the role of antigen presenting cells (APC) in mucosal tissue sites in various veterinary species is reviewed. In such research field, the interest toward the porcine species as experimental models is growing: the functioning of pig immune system is closer to that of humans compared to rodents, and their size allows to easily cannulate lymphatic ducts to achieve a better understanding of the mechanisms of cell migrations. The demonstration, quite recently, of the presence of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (previously called natural interferon producing cells, NIPC, and characterized by a remarkable capacity of secreting large amounts of IFNa after challenge), first in blood and secondary lymphoid organs then in the intestinal mucosal of pigs, seems to confirm their key role in the regulation of immunity.
