Role of intestinal epithelial cells in the innate immune defence of the pig intestine.
Veterinary Research, 2006, Volume 37, N°3, 359-368
Intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) is an efficient barrier against potential assailants of the gastrointestinal tract. The various mechanisms by which IEC fulfil this function are reviewed: IEC form a physical barrier, secrete the mucus layer, release antimicrobial peptidic agents (PR-369, NK-lysin, ß-defensin), and interact with the adjacent cells or the immune system cells secreting or receiving information through chemokines and cytokines.
