Prevalence of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in piglets at weaning as a predictor of the severity of the disease in growing pigs.
Proceedings of the 19th IPVS Congress, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2006 - Volume 1:95
This study investigated the relation between the prevalence of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in piglets at weaning and the severity of the disease they developed afterwards. Thirty-nine piglets were selected in three farms (included in the study because of the prevalence of M. hyopneumoniae at weaning) and followed until slaughter. After slaughter, lungs were collected and examined, bronchial swabs were analysed (nested-PCR) and serum samples too (Tween 20 ELISA test), in order to detect the presence of M. hyopneumoniae. The results showed that pigs that were affected by M. hyopneumoniae at weaning were more severely affected by the disease at the time of slaughter. The prevalence of M. hyopneumoniae at weaning was therefore considered to be a reliable predictor of the severity of the disease.
