Assessment of the effect of sow parity on the prevalence of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in piglets at weaning.
Proceedings of the 19th IPVS Congress, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2006 - Volume 1:96
The aim of this study was to determine if sow parity affected the prevalence of M. hyopneumoniae in piglets at weaning. A multi-site 3,000-sow farm was selected for the study. Thirty-nine piglets were randomly chosen and nasal swabs were collected in order to determine the prevalence of M. hyopneumoniae (nested-PCR). Thee groups were then created, according to the sow parity (piglets from young sows, from intermediate sows and from old sows). The exact Fisher test was used for the statistical analysis of the data collected. The results showed that vertical transmission of M. hyopneumoniae was much more important with young sows, though this transmission also existed with intermediate or old sows. This suggests that the prevalence of infection with M. hyopneumoniae could therefore be reduced by taking sow parity into account, but could not be totally avoided.
