Incidence of SEP-like lung lesions at slaughter before, during and after employing vaccination of fatteners against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.
Proceedings of the 19th IPVS Congress, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2006 - Volume 2:220
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of pig vaccination against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae on the presence of swine enzootic pneumonia (SEP)-like lung lesions observed at slaughter. Three groups of fattening pigs were selected for this study. One group of pigs was vaccinated with HYORESP® (Merial) at the time animals arrived at the fattening unit. Lung lesions were assessed at slaughter and blood analyses were also carried out (M. hyopneumoniae ELISA) on non-vaccinated pigs, in order to determine the presence of M. hyopneumoniae antibodies. The results showed that vaccinating pigs against M. hyopneumoniae at the time they arrive at the fattening unit resulted in a reduction of SEP and was therefore economically interesting. However, this vaccination scheme should be used on a regular basis as when abandoned, the incidence of SEP-like lesions tends to increase.
