Correlation between severity of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae lung lesions and carcass quality in Italian heavy weight pigs.
Proceedings of the 19th IPVS Congress, Copenhagen, Denmark, 2006 - Volume 2:217
The aim of this study was to determine if the presence of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae lung lesions and poor carcass quality could be related to each other. The study was conducted on 3,603 heavy-weight pigs (about 160 kg) from 34 Italian farms. After necropsy, M. hyopneumoniae-related lung lesions were analysed (scoring system defined by Madec and Kobisch) and carcass quality evaluated (system meeting the evaluation grid EUROP). The results confirmed that there was indeed a correlation between the presence of M. hyopneumoniae-related lung lesions and the poor quality of the carcass examined. These results suggest that economic losses resulting from M. hyopneumoniae infection could be reduced through an efficient control of this disease.
